At a medium-sized open-pit gold mine, after the ore was coarsely crushed by a jaw crusher, a hammer crusher was originally used for fine crushing. However, the hammer crusher generated significant impact force, resulting in a large amount of fine ore (excessively high content of -200 mesh material). During heap leaching, the ore pile exhibited extremely poor permeability; the cyanide solution could not penetrate uniformly, and channeling even occurred. The leaching recovery rate was only about 60%.
After adjustments, a double-roll crusher was introduced to replace the hammer crusher as the secondary crushing stage, with the roll gap set to 10–15 mm. The compression principle of the double-roll crusher produces flake- and strip-shaped particles. Although the particle size is small, there is very little fine ore. The porosity of the ore pile has significantly improved, and permeability has been restored. The cyanide solution can flow uniformly through the ore pile, increasing the leaching rate to over 75% while avoiding the risk of ore pile caking.

Medium and Fine Crushing Operations
Double-roll crushers are typically used for secondary or tertiary crushing following a jaw crusher, further reducing medium-sized gold ore to a smaller particle size (generally 1–20 mm) to provide material of a suitable size for subsequent grinding or beneficiation operations.
Controlling Product Particle Size
By adjusting the gap between the rollers, the double-roll crusher can control the output particle size with high precision, reducing the production of coarse and excessively fine particles and resulting in a more uniform product particle size.
Reducing Over-crushing
Gold ores often contain brittle gangue minerals; excessive crushing can produce large amounts of fine powder, which adversely affects the performance of subsequent processes such as gravity separation and flotation. The double-roll crusher primarily uses a compression crushing mechanism, resulting in a relatively low rate of over-crushing.
Reducing Costs and Improving Efficiency in Grinding Operations
The ore pre-crushed by a double-roll crusher has a fine and uniform particle size, which can significantly reduce the feed size for ball mills or semi-autogenous mills, lower energy and steel consumption during grinding, and improve grinding efficiency.

The double-roll crusher uses a double-roll compression crushing mechanism, in which the material is subjected to uniform pressure between the roll surfaces. This results in a relatively uniform particle size after crushing and a low fine-powder content, which helps improve the recovery rate in gold ore beneficiation.
Moderate crushing ratio with high adjustability
The roller gap is adjustable, with a crushing ratio typically ranging from 3 to 10. The output particle size can be flexibly adjusted according to process requirements to meet the crushing needs of different stages.
Good adaptability to ore containing water or clay
Double-roll crushers are less prone to clogging when processing ore containing a certain amount of moisture or clay, and are more adaptable than some impact crushers.
Low Energy Consumption and Low Operating Costs
Compared to hammer crushers, impact crushers, and other types, double-roll crushers operate at lower speeds and consume less energy. Additionally, their wear parts (roll liners) have a relatively long service life, resulting in lower maintenance costs.
